139 years ago today in 1887, Marcus Mosiah Garvey Jr., the great pan-Africanist was born in Jamaica. In July 1921. he gave a speech, “Explanation of the Objects of the Universal Negro Improvement Association,” in New York City. This is a studio recording adapted from his longer speech “A Membership Appeal from Marcus Garvey to the Negro Citizens of New York”. It is one of two recordings of him speaking, the other being “Hon. Marcus Garvey on his return to the USA”, which is on the opposite side of the 78 rpm record as “Explanation of the Objects of the Universal Negro Improvement Association.”
