Thanks for this. I belong to the third generations of both of my families that were born free. All of my great grandparents were slaves except for one of my maternal great grandmothers who was born in 1866. I still remember the story of my great great grandmother Bet (Elizabeth) who bore two daughters sired by her master Hilliard Whitehead. Bet’s daughters were Ella and Anna. Bet married a Black man named Tom Pless who proudly gave his last name to his two “new” daughters Ella and Anna Pless. Ella Pless Wilkes who married Frank Wilkes (Pa Frank) was my great grandmother.
