The trick was turning stolen rights into supposed human deficiencies. Once Black exclusion could be described as nature, the theft disappeared and the promise of equality stayed clean on the page. That move never left American politics. Power still calls the people it excludes unready, unqualified or dangerous, then treats the exclusion as proof.
